Discovering Austin’s Amazing Baby & Me Activities: A New Mom’s Journey

Posted by Amy Kiska, Co-founder & CEO of Recess
Seven months ago, my world completely changed when Maya arrived. As a new mom and the co-founder of Recess, I’ve been on an incredible journey exploring the rich landscape of baby & me activities. What I’ve discovered has not only strengthened my bond with Maya but has also reinforced why I’m so passionate about making quality children’s activities accessible to every family.
Why Baby & Me Activities Are Essential for Early Development
Before diving into Austin’s incredible offerings, let me share what I’ve learned about the profound developmental benefits of these early parent-child activities. As someone who researches children’s programming for Recess, I can tell you that the science behind baby & me classes is remarkable.
- Cognitive Development: Research shows that 80% of the brain’s neural connections are made by age three, making these early months absolutely critical. Interactive activities that engage multiple senses simultaneously create powerful neural pathways that support future learning, problem-solving, and memory formation.
- Social-Emotional Growth: Baby & me classes provide Maya’s first exposure to social environments outside our family. She’s learning to observe other babies, respond to new voices, and navigate different energies—all while feeling secure in my presence. This foundation builds confidence and social awareness that will serve her throughout life.
- Motor Skill Development: From tummy time workshops that strengthen her core to music classes that encourage reaching and grasping instruments, these activities target both fine and gross motor development in age-appropriate ways.
- Language Acquisition: Even at seven months, Maya is absorbing the rhythm, tone, and patterns of language through songs, stories, and interactive play. Many parents report their babies reaching developmental milestones ahead of schedule after participating in music and language-rich programs.
- Bonding and Attachment: Perhaps most importantly, these shared experiences create precious bonding moments. In our busy world, these classes give us dedicated time to focus entirely on each other, strengthening our attachment and communication.
Here’s our comprehensive guide to the best options in the city:
Music & Movement Classes
- Mi Casa Es Tu Casa – Multiple locations – Laura’s Spanish music classes are specifically designed for families with babies from birth to 4.5 years old, incorporating Spanish, sign language, rhythm, and musical development. Maya lights up during every 55-minute session, and I love that we’re giving her early exposure to bilingual education.

Even though Maya isn’t quite old enough yet, I’m already excited for when she can participate.

My Personal Recommendations as a New Mom
After trying numerous programs with Maya, here are my top picks for different stages and interests:
For Brand New Babies (0-3 months): Start with Austin Doula Care’s Tummy Time classes and Library storytimes. These gentle introductions help establish routines without overwhelming tiny babies.
For Active Infants (3-8 months): Mi Casa Es Tu Casa has been transformative for us. The bilingual exposure, musical elements, and Laura’s incredible energy make every class a joy. Pair this with Baby & Me yoga for your own wellness needs.
For Adventurous Babies (6+ months): Add swimming classes to build confidence in water and sensory art programs to support exploration and creativity.
The Recess Connection: Making Activities Accessible
As I’ve navigated this world of baby & me activities, I’m more convinced than ever of Recess’s mission. While Austin has incredible offerings, finding and booking these classes can be overwhelming for new parents. Many programs fill up quickly, have complex scheduling systems, or require calling during specific hours—not ideal when you’re managing a baby’s unpredictable schedule!
This experience has informed how we’re building features specifically for baby & me activities on the Recess platform. We’re working to make discovery, comparison, and booking as seamless as possible, so parents can spend less time searching and more time bonding with their little ones.
Tips for Success with Baby & Me Activities
Start Small: Don’t overwhelm yourself or your baby. One or two activities per week is plenty to begin with.
Be Flexible: Babies have good days and challenging days. If your little one is fussy, don’t force it. Most instructors are incredibly understanding.
Connect with Other Parents: These classes are as much about building your support network as they are about your baby’s development. Some of my closest mom friends came from these early classes.
Trust the Process: Your baby might seem disinterested at first, but they’re absorbing everything. Maya’s favorites now are classes she seemed indifferent to initially.
Invest in Quality: While there are free options, don’t hesitate to invest in well-designed programs with trained instructors. The developmental benefits are worth it.
Looking Ahead
As Maya grows, I’m excited to explore Austin’s toddler programs and beyond. The foundation we’re building now through these baby & me activities: her comfort with new environments, exposure to music and movement, early social skills, and our strengthened bond, will serve her throughout her childhood.
For fellow Austin parents, I encourage you to dive into this incredible world of baby & me activities. Whether you’re drawn to music, movement, art, or nature-based programs, our city offers something special for every family. The investment in these early experiences pays dividends in your child’s development and in the precious memories you’ll create together.
